Laurel's Library Books

Our daughter Laurel is five. Despite all efforts on our part she does not do what she is told. These are her choices this week from her local library in Bakewell:-

Horace & Maurice by Dick King-Smith, illustrated by Sami Sweeten - Doubleday 1991 isbn 0385 400500

So, what happens when Mrs Primrose feed their baby "Pussogrub?" A cracking story that Laurel can just about read out aloud by herself. A good early introduction to the author of The Sheep-Pig, which the Australian film industry turned into Babe.

A Year In The City by Kathy Henderson, illustrated by Paul Howard - Walker Books 1996 isbn 0-7445-2579-9

Something to read out aloud at bedtime. Especially good to explain the nature of seasons, and why, current weather notwithstanding, it's not always cold, wet and windy in the city.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle - Puffin 1970 isbn 0-14-050087-1

You might think this classic is a bit young for a five year old. Laurel chose it because she knew she could have a really good bash at reading it all by herself. A handy hint is let them go back to earlier books when they are grappling with the meaning of words on the page.

Keeping Secrets by Jenny Koralek & Steve Cox - Blue Bananas Heinemann 1997 isbn 07497 28124

Rosie's spectacular Aunt Jobiska appears to know something no one else does, and do they have secrets to keep ...?
They do and having kept them get the chance to sail the seas with their new neighbour Mr Dillon and his huge boat.

Excellent for able 5 years to read and have read to them. Like all Blue Bananas sophisticated themes in simple language.

Her elder sister Claire likes

Gobbolino - The Witch's Cat by Ursula Moray Williams -Harrap reprint of 1942 original, 1984-91
                                                                                                                                  isbn 0 245 53768 6

Claire's mum remembers reading this when she was eight too. Gobbolino wants to be ordinary, but he keeps making himself invisible.....

A classic - perhaps a progenitor of Winnie The Witch and her cat Wilbur, who keeps disappearing. (This also available as an excellent animated PC CD book Valerie Thomas (words) and Korky Paul (illustrations) with voice-overs by Sandy Tosvik Brother Intricks Prague (Animation) Inner Workings Ltd 1996 OUP and made macro media 1996)
