The Association has a regular electronic
newsletter which details the different types of projects taking place around the country,
conference and training details, job & funding opportunities and residences, as well
as information bulletins, a regularly updated contact list of Development Workers
and organises a bi-annual meeting as a means of networking, providing informal training
and dealing with the business of the Association. Whilst the Association is a membership
organisation established to meet the needs of Literature Development Workers, it also has
an Affiliate Membership scheme to enable interested individuals and organisations to be
kept in contact with the activities of the network. There
must be around a hundred Literature Development Workers contracted by organisations to
carry out a wide range of activities. Many of these are library based, often on fixed term
contracts although an increasing number of library authorities have employed full-time,
permanent Development Workers as part of the staff establishment. Since 1993, the Arts
Council of England and Regional Arts Boards' Literature Departments, in partnership with
Local Authorities have developed a programme of funding for Literature Development posts
primarily in Libraries, Education Departments and in Local Arts Development Agencies.
Following the pioneering work of Ruth Borthwick, NALD are
pleased to have recently appointed Steve Dearden, (formerly Literature Officer at
Yorkshire Arts) as their full-time co-ordinator, and Steve would be keen to hear of your
