Welcome to Poetry Book of the Month – a year long celebration of the most exciting and accessible new poetry available today.

Teams of readers from all over the West Midlands have argued, debated, and stayed up late reading to choose the very best hot-off-the-press poetry. Only one book can be selected each month from hordes of brilliant editions available from three of the UK’s great poetry publishers; Faber and Faber, Picador and Bloodaxe – so each month’s choice is guaranteed to be something special, stamped with the seal of approval of readers from across the West Midlands.

Copies of The Book of The Month are available for you to borrow from participating libraries, so take The Poetry Book of the Month home with you. Or demand it from all good bookshops!

Never tried new poetry before? Neither had some of our readers, but dipping their toes into poetry water led to unexpected delight, pleasures and discoveries.
                                                                                         Christine Bridgwood

The Libraries

Without poets, there are no poems. Without publishers, there are no books. Without books, there are no readers. Without readers, there are no libraries - the librarians in Poetry Book Of The Month are readers too.

Much of Poetry Book Of The Month is based upon Poetry On Loan, which has taken and sustained the Poetry Society's Poetry Place scheme from the end of last century into the new millennium!

Without Poetry On Loan it would be hard to envisage Poetry Book of The Month. I wanted to include Birmingham Libraries' Philip Benjamin-Coker's explanation, but this page is too long...

...so, click here for Why Poetry On Loan? and an answer to Eliot's quest:-

Where is the life we have lost in living?
Where is wisdom we have lost in knowledge?
Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?

Click here for Poetry On Loan itself, but down to brass tacks, here are Poetry Book Of The  Month participating libraries and library staff:-

Earlsdon Library, Coventry (Carol Jones and Janice Bobby)
Hall Green Library, Birmingham (Mike Reed)
Olton Library, Solihull (Nicola Thomas)
Redditch Library
-see"Libraries Directory"Worcestershire (Charles Johnson & David Pearson)
Warwick Library, Warwickshire (Kate Mackie)
Wolverhampton Library, Wolverhampton (Simon Fletcher)
